How It Works

Road to your license

Pennsylvania has a graduated licensing program, which means teens have a set of steps they need to take before becoming a full-licensed, restriction-less driver.

  1. Get your Junior Learner's Permit
The first step in Pennsylvania isn't to take a driver ed course, but to visit your local PennDOT branch and take your written knowledge exam. Remember, you have to be at least 16 years old to take it!
  2. Get your Pennsylvania Provisional Driver's License
Once you have completed your 65 hours of practice driving and have held your learner's permit for at least six months, you're headed back to your local PennnDOT office to take pass a driving test.
  3. Complete a Driver Ed's Course
Here is where we come in! Now that you have our provisional license, it's time to take a driver education course. You cannot become an unrestricted driver at 17 and ½ years old unless you have completed a state-approved 30-hour driver education course.
  4. Get Your Pennsylvania Driver's License
Once you have held your provisional license for a year and complete a driver's ed course, you are ready for a senior driver's license. You have to be at least 17 ½ years old and you cannot have any driver violations or at-fault accidents on your record. If you apply before you are 18, you are required to send a Form DL-59 in the mail. If you wait until you are 18, you will automatically become a senior driver's license holder.
